The US military came dangerously close to intercepting a Chinese vessel in the Middle East earlier this year after an artificial intelligence system provided faulty intelligence about the ship's cargo, according to a CNN report published Friday.

American intelligence indicated the vessel was transporting nuclear weapons-related components, prompting US forces to prepare for a boarding operation. The mission was aborted only after officials discovered that an AI chatbot used by an analyst had incorrectly identified the materials aboard the ship.

One source familiar with the incident told CNN the intelligence report was "entirely false" but "almost started a war" between the two powers. The report did not specify what the vessel was actually carrying or its destination.
