DHS Launches $1M AI Challenge for Biological Threat Detection

The Science and Technology Directorate's three-stage competition seeks algorithms that can identify biothreats in environmental data by October 2026.

The Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate is offering nearly $1 million in prize money to developers who can build artificial intelligence systems capable of rapidly identifying biological threats hidden in complex environmental data.

The competition, called Ready, Set…ID the Biothreat, will award up to $999,990 across three stages running through October 2026, according to details first reported by ExecutiveGov. Submissions are due October 14.

What DHS is seeking

The challenge targets a specific technical problem: detecting biological threat signals within environmental metagenomic datasets—genetic material sampled directly from the environment. Winning algorithms must distinguish genuine threats from harmless background noise and provide explainable, confidence-scored results that emergency responders can act on quickly.

Eligibility is limited to U.S. citizens 18 and older, as well as domestic companies, academic institutions, and national laboratories. Participants retain full ownership of their pre-existing intellectual property.

Three-stage structure

Competitors will move through proposal evaluation, prototype development, and final blinded validation phases. DHS has published complete technical specifications and entry procedures through its official portal.

Pedro Allende, DHS under secretary for science and technology, framed the initiative as part of a broader departmental effort to strengthen national preparedness against emerging biological risks. "DHS is investing in next-generation tools that can strengthen the nation's ability to recognize emerging biological risks and protect the American people, agriculture, critical infrastructure, and the economy," Allende said.

Why it matters

Biological threats are becoming computationally harder to detect as synthetic biology advances and threat actors gain access to more sophisticated tools. Traditional detection methods struggle with the volume and complexity of modern metagenomic data, which can contain millions of genetic sequences from thousands of organisms in a single sample.

AI-assisted detection offers speed and pattern recognition at scale, but only if algorithms can reliably separate signal from noise and explain their reasoning to human analysts. The explainability requirement is critical—emergency response decisions demand transparency about why a system flagged a particular sample as threatening.

Broader context

The prize challenge builds on DHS S&T's Genesis Mission, an ongoing effort to scale AI-enabled platforms for detecting, characterizing, and attributing biological threats. The directorate expects to expand its AI-driven biosurveillance portfolio as biological hazards grow more complex.

The initiative reflects a government-wide push to leverage AI for national security applications while maintaining human oversight and decision authority. By structuring the effort as an open competition rather than a traditional contract, DHS aims to tap innovation from non-traditional sources including startups and academic labs.
