Demis Hassabis Steps Back from Google DeepMind Leadership

Google is restructuring its artificial intelligence leadership, with Google DeepMind head Demis Hassabis moving into a more strategic role while operational control passes to a longtime lieutenant.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced Wednesday that Hassabis will become chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet. Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind's chief technology officer, will step up to senior vice president of DeepMind and report directly to Pichai. Kavukcuoglu will retain his existing title as Google's chief AI architect.

Hassabis pivots to drug development and AGI strategy

Hassabis will continue leading Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's AI-driven drug discovery subsidiary. In a message to staff, he framed the transition around applying AI to healthcare challenges.

"I've always believed the No.1 application of AI should be to improve human health," Hassabis wrote. "It's time for AI to prove its unequivocal value to the world, and what better way to demonstrate that than to help finally cure diseases like cancer."

Hassabis said he will continue working closely with Pichai on strategic matters related to artificial general intelligence and will advise Kavukcuoglu and other DeepMind leaders.

Jeff Dean exits to launch AI startup

In a parallel move, Jeff Dean—Google's 30th employee and chief scientist of Google DeepMind—is departing to co-found an AI-focused public benefit corporation called Discovery Loop. Dean will launch the venture with Google Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat, with Google serving as a founding investor.

Discovery Loop's stated mission is building AI systems that can "automatically solve important problems in machine learning, science, and engineering," according to the company's website. The goal is to accelerate the pace of engineering and scientific discovery.
