Sharp decline in traditional tech hiring
Computer science graduates in the UK are experiencing a dramatic contraction in traditional employment opportunities, according to new data from the 2027 Guardian University Guide. The proportion of computer science graduates securing professional positions as coders or programmers plummeted from approximately 40% to just 28% last year, marking one of the steepest declines in any graduate field.
The shift extends beyond specific job titles. Overall graduate-level employment for computer science majors fell from more than 60% two years ago to 50%, suggesting a broader restructuring of entry-level opportunities in the technology sector.
Matt Hiely-Rayner, director of Intelligent Metrix consultancy who compiles the Guardian's guide, pointed to AI's growing capability to handle routine development tasks as a likely driver. "With AI providing such responsive and cheap grunt work in this field, it's hard not to conclude that this is behind the trend," he said.
Economics majors also affected
The disruption extends beyond software development. Economics graduates, who previously enjoyed robust demand from financial services employers, are seeing similar pressure. Roles in financial analysis, economics, and management consulting—traditionally well-compensated positions for new graduates—showed declining hiring numbers.
Charlie Ball, head of labour market intelligence for Jisc, the UK's education and research technology agency, noted that finance employers are fundamentally changing how they staff teams rather than simply eliminating positions. "Most saying they are not replacing jobs with it, they are changing jobs. They expect new hires to have familiarity with AI," Ball explained.
Some computer science graduates are pivoting to adjacent specialties including cybersecurity and network engineering, suggesting the field is fragmenting rather than disappearing entirely. Ball emphasized that pure coding positions appear particularly affected while other technical roles remain available.

For universities and students, it signals an urgent need to rethink curriculum and career preparation. The speed of change—a 12-percentage-point drop in a single year—suggests the disruption is accelerating faster than educational institutions typically adapt. Companies experimenting with leaner technical teams may gain short-term advantages, but the long-term implications for talent pipelines and innovation capacity remain uncertain.
Universities respond with curriculum changes
Some institutions are already adapting. The University of Birmingham, which rose to 14th place overall in the Guardian rankings, now offers undergraduates an "intercalated year" option allowing students to add subjects like AI and data science without typical prerequisites.
Adam Tickell, Birmingham's vice-chancellor, framed the changes as essential preparation. "Our young people need to understand how to use these things properly. It's about giving students the ability to do a deep dive into the way the world is changing," he said.
The findings come from the Higher Education Statistics Agency's graduate outcomes survey, which collected responses from more than 350,000 former students 15 months after completing their courses in 2024. The Guardian first reported these details.
