Three of the world's most prominent AI chatbots—ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok—experienced outages within minutes of each other on Thursday morning, raising questions about whether the incidents were connected.

The timing suggested a possible shared infrastructure problem, but the companies provided divergent explanations when pressed for details, according to WIRED, which first reported the story.

OpenAI spokesperson Kathleen Chaykowski said a routing error starting around 7:43 am Pacific Time made ChatGPT and Codex unavailable for some users. The company implemented a fix by 8:17 am PT and continued monitoring the situation.

Anthropic began reporting a partial outage at 6:23 am PT affecting Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Fable 5.1, and Claude Opus 5. The company said it identified the cause and deployed a fix, marking the issue resolved by 9:16 am PT. Claude Sonnet 5 experienced brief similar issues shortly after 9 am PT. Anthropic declined to provide additional comment to WIRED.

xAI reported Grok outages across all platforms starting at 6:30 am PT. SpaceX, xAI's parent company, later attributed the problems to "an outage at our Memphis compute center this morning." The company also apologized "to our impacted compute partners" in public comments. Service was restored by 10:05 am PT.

The near-simultaneous failures of multiple AI systems highlight the fragility of infrastructure supporting enterprise and consumer AI services. When ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok all go down at once, businesses relying on these tools for customer service, content generation, and coding assistance face immediate productivity losses. The lack of transparency about root causes—and whether the incidents were truly independent—raises questions about shared dependencies in the AI ecosystem that companies may not be disclosing.

Missing pieces in the puzzle

The coinciding timing initially pointed to a shared third-party service provider, but neither OpenAI nor Anthropic cited an external source as the culprit. Major internet infrastructure providers including Cloudflare, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure reported no outages on Thursday.

One potential connection: Anthropic and xAI announced a compute partnership with SpaceX in May. SpaceX's reference to "impacted compute partners" in its Thursday statement could suggest Anthropic's outage was related to the Memphis data center failure, though Anthropic did not confirm this.

There were scattered reports of a possible Google Gemini outage Thursday morning as well, but Google did not confirm any incidents on its service status dashboard and did not respond to requests for comment.

The episode underscores how little visibility users have into the infrastructure dependencies of AI services they've come to rely on for daily operations.
