Brain-Reading Wearables Enter Workplaces as Privacy Debate Begins

Neurotechnology companies are deploying EEG headsets to monitor employee focus and stress, while researchers demonstrate they can decode thoughts into speech.

Neuroscience has reached a threshold moment: researchers can now decode visual experiences, emotions, and even language directly from brain activity—and the technology is moving rapidly from laboratory experiments into commercial products worn by workers and consumers.

Rafael Yuste, a neuroscientist at Columbia University, demonstrated this capability in experiments with mice. His team identified which neurons fired when mice viewed moving light patterns, then used lasers to activate those same neurons directly. The mice behaved identically whether they saw real images or had the patterns implanted in their brains. "What we can do in a mouse today we can do in a human tomorrow," Yuste told WIRED in an excerpt from James Crawford's forthcoming book The Vanishing Earth.

The implications extend far beyond the lab. In 2023, a paralyzed woman named Ann Johnson spoke again through 253 electrodes implanted on her brain surface, translating her thoughts into speech at 78 words per minute through an animated avatar. The lead neurosurgeon, Edward Chang, reportedly told Yuste he couldn't sleep after the breakthrough, recognizing both its medical promise and its potential for misuse.

Commercial brain monitoring arrives

Noninvasive brain-reading devices using electroencephalography (EEG) are now entering workplaces and homes. The neurotech company Emotiv has trialed EEG headsets combined with earbuds that monitor office workers' attention levels and cognitive stress throughout the day. The system recommends breaks when stress spikes and focus drops. Emotiv CEO Tan Le predicts brain tracking in workplaces "will be quite ubiquitous" within five years, according to details first reported by WIRED.

EEG headbands already monitor truck drivers and miners for fatigue. More controversially, the company BrainCo supplied "Focus" headsets to primary school children in China to track concentration, with data uploaded to servers and accessible to teachers but not students or parents. The project was suspended after media coverage. Dubai police have used a technology called iCognative that scans suspects' brains with EEG to detect involuntary recognition responses—in one case reportedly prompting a murder confession.

Consumer applications are proliferating. Companies market EEG devices for meditation, sleep improvement, and mood regulation. BrainBit suggests users could "automatically broadcast your mood to your social media page" or use the technology for "neuromarketing" to reveal "subconscious reaction of consumers." In 2022, Emotiv partnered with L'Oreal to develop in-store EEG technology for personalized fragrance consultations based on neural activity.

Apple, Meta, and Snap are all developing neurotechnology products. Meta and Snap aim to translate thoughts into computer actions. Apple has filed a patent for a device that would likely incorporate EEG sensors into AirPods.

Why it matters

The mind has traditionally been the one domain fully private from external observation. As brain-reading technology becomes wearable and affordable, that sanctuary faces commercialization. Yuste warns against allowing corporations to "bank and sell brain data," arguing the mind must remain protected as the foundation of personal identity. Yet the economic incentives are already in motion: researchers have discussed paying people $30,000 annually to wear "thinking hats" that continuously record brain data—a concept that could easily migrate from research subjects to gig workers trading neural activity for income, much as people currently trade personal data for website access.
