Army Tests AI Battlefield Platform With Built-In Cybersecurity

The U.S. Army is deploying an ambitious AI-powered battlefield platform that consolidates more than 40 applications into a single combat interface — while simultaneously proving it can defend the system against cyber threats in real time.

The Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2) platform represents a fundamental shift in how military forces coordinate operations, making it an inevitable target for adversaries. Testing under simulated fire

The Army recently invited reporters to observe Project Convergence at Fort Irwin's National Training Center, where the 4th Infantry Division spent days using NGC2 during staged combat scenarios across 1,000 square miles of Mojave Desert terrain. Soldiers carried tablets displaying real-time positions of friendly forces, vehicles and buildings while commanders coordinated operations involving tanks, Strykers and sniper teams.

Built around Anduril's Lattice software, the platform pulls together applications from more than 60 vendors to support radio communications, electromagnetic warfare, military planning, drone operations and battlefield tracking. According to Axios, which first reported details of the testing, the system is designed to create a unified operational picture from disparate military systems.

Security embedded from the start

Army leaders emphasized that cybersecurity requirements shaped vendor selection and platform architecture from the beginning, rather than being added after development. Every application undergoes code scans, risk assessments and technical reviews before entering the operational environment, said Joe Welch, the Army official overseeing command-and-control modernization.

"Could you imagine if we built this really complicated ecosystem of stuff you've seen here, and then said, 'OK, now it's time to take it all apart and do all the cybersecurity scans'?" Maj. Gen. Patrick Ellis, commander of the 4th Infantry Division, told reporters. "It would take forever."

Instead, cybersecurity teams continuously scan software as it integrates and throughout its operational use. Army Cyber Command has conducted defense assessments alongside NGC2 testing over the past year, feeding security findings directly into development.

Quarantine in action

The platform includes automated threat detection capabilities. During recent testing, monitoring tools identified unusual behavior from one application and automatically quarantined it while investigators determined whether it had been compromised, Lt. Col. Ruben Rangel told Axios.

Real-world friction points

Not everything performed flawlessly during the Fort Irwin exercises. Some soldiers temporarily lost platform access due to connectivity issues. Others maintained analog whiteboard maps as backups while learning the new tablet interface.

An earlier software version required troops to repeatedly enter complex passwords while wearing combat gloves inside moving vehicles — a design flaw commanders pushed vendors to fix. The authentication process was redesigned to allow single sign-on while maintaining layered security controls.

What comes next

The Army has requested $4 billion for fiscal 2027 to continue testing and expanding NGC2. Ellis characterized the platform as "ready but not done," noting that continuous updates will be necessary but that the majority of tools are prepared for deployment.
