Anthropic has established a physical biology laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area, marking a significant expansion of its artificial intelligence work into drug discovery and development, according to Reuters.

The AI company, known for its Claude chatbot, confirmed it operates a wet lab — a facility for hands-on biological experiments — as part of its push to develop treatments for diseases the pharmaceutical industry has historically neglected. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic's head of life sciences, told Reuters that the company combines in-house lab work with external partnerships, similar to traditional biotech firms.

"We believe that to do biology, the final test is still and will be for a while in real lab work," Kauderer-Abrams said in the interview. An Anthropic spokesperson later clarified the lab is not specifically for drug discovery, though declined to provide additional details.

Physical automation and AI integration

The company is exploring how its Claude AI can direct robotic systems to execute scientific experiments with reduced human intervention, according to people familiar with the matter. Anthropic maintains that human oversight remains essential for safety.

"We're in the very early innings of using AI to automate the execution of lab work," Kauderer-Abrams said, describing it as "an area that has the potential to bring about meaningful acceleration in so many different processes."

Recent job postings reveal Anthropic's expansion plans. The company has sought a procurement operations leader and experts in protein and nucleic acid characterization. One listing stated the goal is "to speed up progress in the life sciences by an order of magnitude."

Targeting 'undruggable' diseases

For CEO Dario Amodei, the initiative carries personal significance. In a recent essay, he revealed that a disease killed his father shortly before a cure was developed. The company aims to accelerate development of treatments for conditions previously considered "undruggable" — too complex to address with conventional methods.

Kauderer-Abrams indicated AI could expedite discovery of sophisticated molecules like bispecific and trispecific antibodies, which target multiple points on proteins or cells simultaneously.

The company has not disclosed which specific diseases it is targeting or its current progress. Bringing a drug to market typically requires years of human clinical trials, a phase Anthropic has not yet undertaken. Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's drug discovery subsidiary, has worked for years toward reaching clinical trials and recently pushed that milestone to late 2026.

Balancing commercial partnerships

Anthropodic provides AI services and tools to major pharmaceutical companies including Genentech, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Novo Nordisk. The company also acquired Coefficient Bio for approximately $400 million in stock, according to media reports, and added Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan to its board.

To address potential competition concerns, Kauderer-Abrams said Anthropic has established boundaries. The company is not currently running clinical trials and focuses on areas traditional pharma companies find financially unattractive.

"We're not competing with pharma and biotech companies that make their business in bringing drugs to market," he said.
