Anthropic has established a wet lab in the San Francisco Bay Area where it conducts physical biology experiments, marking a significant expansion of the AI company's push into drug research and development.

Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic's head of life sciences, confirmed the lab's existence in an interview with Reuters. "We believe that to do biology, the final test is still and will be for a while in real lab work," he said. "We absolutely are doing that today." An Anthropic spokesperson later clarified that while the lab exists, it is not exclusively dedicated to drug discovery, though the company declined to provide additional details.

The company has launched Claude Science, a research workbench that connects to over 60 scientific databases with specialized toolkits for genomics, proteomics, and structural biology. Anthropic also acquired Coefficient Bio for approximately $400 million in stock to advance its drug development capabilities.

On the governance side, Anthropic added Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan to its board. The life sciences division has grown into one of the company's most heavily staffed and resourced departments, according to Kauderer-Abrams.

Pharma partnerships and strategic boundaries

Anthropic has established collaborations with several major pharmaceutical companies. This week, the company announced a partnership with Novo Nordisk aimed at accelerating drug discovery using Claude. It previously reached an agreement giving Bristol-Myers Squibb workforce access to Claude for research and development, and is providing AI services to Roche's Genentech.

Kauderer-Abrams stressed that Anthropic is not positioning itself as a competitor to pharmaceutical and biotech companies. "We're not competing with pharma and biotech companies that make their business in bringing drugs to market," he said. The company has set a clear boundary against running clinical trials for now.
