Amazon Investigates Engineers Who Testified on AI Data Centers

Amazon launches internal probes after employee testimony
Amazon has opened investigations into at least three engineers who testified before the Seattle City Council about the environmental and regulatory implications of artificial intelligence data centers, according to a complaint filed with the Seattle Office for Civil Rights.
The investigations began after five Amazon employees spoke at public hearings earlier this month, where Seattle officials gathered input on a proposed one-year moratorium on new large-scale data center construction. The city council unanimously approved the pause on June 9 to develop regulatory frameworks for these facilities.
During the hearings, the employees criticized what they described as an "all-costs-justified AI build out" by major technology companies. Following their testimony, three workers were individually called into Zoom meetings with human resources representatives who informed them they were under investigation for potential policy violations.
According to the complaint, the employees were told the investigations could result in disciplinary action ranging up to termination. The complaint alleges Amazon violated a Seattle ordinance prohibiting workplace discrimination based on political ideology and other protected characteristics.
Company defends investigation as policy enforcement
Amazon spokesperson Margaret Callahan said the company determined the employees may have been speaking "in their capacity as Amazonians and not as private citizens" based on how they represented themselves and how their comments were received by the council.
Callahan stated that Amazon requires employees to follow specific procedures before speaking as company representatives. She disputed claims that the company plans to terminate the workers or explicitly threatened termination, adding that Amazon does not tolerate retaliatory behavior.
The employees are members of Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, an advocacy group that has consistently challenged the company on environmental policy, workforce treatment, and technology deployment decisions. Two AECJ founders were fired in 2020 for what Amazon called "repeatedly violating internal policies" after they publicly criticized the company's coronavirus protections for warehouse workers. Amazon settled with those employees in 2021 after they filed a federal labor complaint.

Amazon has committed up to $200 billion in capital expenditures this year, primarily for AI infrastructure, while simultaneously cutting 30,000 corporate positions since October. The investigation raises questions about whether employees at major technology companies can participate in public policy discussions about the industries they help build, particularly as AI data centers face mounting public opposition. A recent Gallup poll found 70% of Americans oppose AI data center construction in their communities, citing environmental and quality-of-life concerns.
Darius Irani, an Amazon employee with more than five years at the company, said he does not regret his testimony. "All I did was testify because I believe it's critical that the government regulates data centers and AI," Irani stated. "Workers need to be involved in these conversations."
