Albertsons Launches Safeway ChatGPT Plugin for Grocery Orders

The retailer's conversational AI integration lets shoppers build carts and reorder lists through natural language prompts.

Albertsons Companies has integrated its Safeway grocery brand into ChatGPT through a new plugin that enables customers to shop using conversational prompts, the company announced August 5, 2026.

The plugin allows Safeway customers to perform core grocery tasks—reordering weekly lists, discovering products, building meal-based carts, and finding sale items—entirely through natural language interactions within ChatGPT. Users activate the plugin within ChatGPT's interface, connect their Safeway account, and can then issue requests like "Reorder my weekly shopping list" or "Help me plan a quick pasta dinner for four."

How the integration works

Customers access the plugin by searching for "Safeway" in ChatGPT's plugin directory and linking their existing Safeway account. Once connected, typing "@Safeway" in any ChatGPT conversation surfaces the plugin automatically.

The system translates customer requests into product recommendations drawn from Safeway's inventory, then populates a shopping cart based on those selections. Customers review and modify the cart before being redirected to Safeway's platform to complete checkout. According to Albertsons, users maintain full control over purchasing decisions throughout the process.

The plugin supports meal planning, list building, product discovery, reordering, and identifying relevant savings—covering what the company describes as common grocery missions.

Why it matters

Conversational commerce represents a significant shift in how retailers think about digital friction. By embedding shopping capabilities directly into AI chat interfaces where consumers already spend time, grocers can intercept purchase intent at the moment it forms—before customers open a dedicated app or website. For Albertsons, which operates 2,240 retail stores across 35 states as of June 2026, the plugin extends its digital reach into a platform controlled by a third party, OpenAI, betting that convenience outweighs the loss of owned-channel engagement.

The move also signals how large language models are becoming transactional infrastructure, not just information tools. As consumer comfort with AI assistants grows, retailers face pressure to meet customers in these new environments or risk ceding mindshare to competitors who do.

Broader AI strategy

Jill Pavlovich, SVP of Digital Customer Experience at Albertsons, cited research indicating growing consumer interest in using AI for grocery shopping, though the company did not disclose specific adoption targets for the plugin. The Safeway integration builds on existing AI tools the retailer has deployed, including an AI shopping assistant and Ask AI capabilities designed to streamline product discovery and basket-building.

Albertsons Companies operates multiple grocery banners including Albertsons, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's, ACME, and Tom Thumb, alongside 1,708 in-store pharmacies and 408 fuel centers. The company has not announced whether similar ChatGPT plugins will roll out to its other brands.

Details of the Safeway ChatGPT plugin were first reported by Albertsons Companies in a press release.
