AI Startup Versus Cuts Streaming Churn With Interactive Overlays
A previously stealth-mode AI company has emerged with a novel approach to one of streaming's most persistent problems: subscriber churn. Versus has been working behind the scenes with major platforms including Disney+, Paramount+ and HBO Max to layer interactive experiences over their content, turning passive viewing into participatory engagement.
The company's technology generates games, trivia, polls and challenges that viewers access by pointing their mobile phones at streaming content. Rather than scrolling through TikTok or Instagram during a show, viewers compete on leaderboards, make predictions and win prizes tied directly to what they're watching. The approach has been deployed across current series like The Madison and Landman, library titles including The Sopranos and Game of Thrones, and films ranging from Dune to Oppenheimer.
Versus reports measurable results from its campaigns: 16% longer session lengths, retention lifts between 4.5% and 9.5%, and content start rates exceeding 53% compared to a 2% industry average. Among engaged users, week-over-week retention approaches 70%, according to the company.
Why it matters
Churn costs streaming platforms hundreds of millions of dollars annually in reacquisition expenses. Any technology that demonstrably extends session length and reduces cancellations addresses a core economic challenge for an industry still struggling toward profitability. If Versus can deliver on its retention claims at scale, it represents a rare example of AI creating measurable business value rather than just operational efficiency.
The company's investor roster signals serious industry credibility: Jeffrey Katzenberg, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, former Disney executive and TikTok CEO Kevin Mayer, and TV producer Mark Burnett have all backed the venture. Tom Ryan, who co-founded Pluto TV and later ran streaming at Paramount, recently joined as an investor.
From B2B to consumer play
Versus was founded in 2019 by tech entrepreneur John Vitti, who serves as CEO, with Jesper Jenson as chief technology officer. Jenson previously held leadership roles at Yahoo Games, PlayerScale and Electronic Arts. The company has operated primarily as a business-to-business service provider, with revenue from platform fees, sponsorships, ad integrations and interactive experiences.
The company is now making its first direct-to-consumer move with FourPlay.ai, an interactive platform focused on live sports including the World Cup, along with other streaming content and live events. Versus positions its AI technology as more intuitive than earlier "second-screen" companies that emerged in the 2010s but missed the AI revolution. The company says its proprietary system can eventually integrate directly into partner streaming services rather than requiring a separate app.
"Versus was built on the belief that the future of entertainment is participatory, not passive," Vitti said. "AI is allowing us to transform content into something audiences can play, react to and engage with in real time, creating a more personalized and dynamic experience for fans while unlocking new value for media and entertainment partners."
Beyond streaming platforms, Versus has worked with the NFL, content providers like Lionsgate, and digital platforms including Reddit. The company has also deployed its technology around major film releases and classic library titles like Casablanca and Night of the Living Dead.
