AI-Generated Rescue Video Spreads False Hope After Nepal Floods

A video purporting to show the dramatic rescue of a six-year-old girl from rubble following catastrophic flooding at the Nepal-Tibet border was entirely fabricated using artificial intelligence tools, according to an investigation by AFP.

The synthetic footage spread widely across social media platforms in early September 2026, appearing on X, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Chinese platform Baijiahao. Posts claimed the video showed a child rescued after being trapped for nearly 60 hours following the August 26 disaster that killed at least 1,385 people and left more than 5,500 missing.

Multiple visual anomalies reveal fabrication

Close examination of the 30-second clip reveals numerous telltale signs of AI generation. At the 10-second mark, one rescuer's face appears distorted. Four people initially carry the girl, but a fifth person materializes without explanation at 14 seconds. In the same frame, a rescuer's hand vanishes near the child's head.

Additional errors compound at 16 seconds, where the girl's hand appears to merge with her leg as rescuers move her arm. Later footage purporting to show the child being fed displays distorted letters on rescuers' badges. Analysis by Hive Moderation's AI detection tool confirmed the video likely contained synthetic content.

Creator admits to fabricating disaster footage

AFP traced the video to an India-based "AI creator" who posted it on Instagram on August 30 with an AI content label. The creator openly acknowledged fabricating the footage using paid tools including Google Flow and Seedance.

"I create these videos using paid AI tools," the creator told AFP, explaining that he leverages AI expertise to produce content around topics expected to perform well online. When asked about viewers believing the footage was authentic, he noted that "advances in AI-generated video have made it increasingly difficult for viewers to distinguish between synthetic and authentic content."
