A new study examining more than 14,000 ebooks sold on Amazon between 2023 and 2026 has documented significant market disruption from AI-generated content. The research found that books containing substantial AI-written text have proliferated rapidly, creating measurable economic harm for human authors.

The data shows book titles with sales increased 19-fold during the study period, while total reader spending grew only ninefold. This disparity means the market became dramatically more crowded without proportional revenue growth, leaving less money for the average title. Books without detected AI text lost market share as AI-generated works spread across the platform.

Anthropic's approach to training data acquisition illustrates the legal complexity. The company purchased millions of used books, removed their spines, scanned the contents for model training, and destroyed the physical copies. A federal judge ruled this digitization process constituted fair use under copyright law, which permits owners to digitize books they possess without creating additional copies.

The legal question shifts when examining what happens after training. Fair use doctrine includes four tests, one of which asks whether the new work harms the market for the original. The Amazon marketplace data reveals the practical consequences of AI's near-zero marginal cost for content production.
