Frontier models reach new capability thresholds
According to the Stanford HAI Center's 2026 AI Index, frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and DeepSeek gained 30 percentage points in a single year on Humanity's Last Exam, a benchmark created by nearly 1,000 subject-matter experts including professors and researchers. The report's authors concluded that "AI capability is not plateauing. It is accelerating and reaching more people than ever."
These models now demonstrate real utility in fields like chemistry, weather forecasting, and astrophysics. Tools like Anthropic's Claude Cowork can autonomously plan, execute, and complete multi-step business workflows, while coding agents from Anthropic and IBM handle complex development tasks.
The SaaSpocalypse and five possible futures
In early 2026, speculation that companies could "vibe code" their own business applications triggered a massive sell-off in ERP stocks. The event, dubbed the "SaaSpocalypse," erased hundreds of billions in market capitalization from companies including Salesforce, Workday, ServiceNow, Adobe, and Intuit.
In May, McKinsey & Company published an analysis mapping five scenarios for how AI will reshape ERP. The most extreme envisions ERP ceasing to exist entirely, with AI agents replicating all capabilities and creating processes on the fly. Data would shift from large database tables to microservices, and application logic would become a commodity managed by agents.
McKinsey partners acknowledged this radical view but outlined more plausible alternatives. In one scenario, ERP persists but users never directly interact with it—instead working through AI agents that set intent, validate outcomes, and handle exceptions. New semantic layers would encode business context beyond traditional database schemas, with an AI operating system managing these ontologies.
A third path sees ERP software remaining largely unchanged, but AI agents dramatically reducing implementation pain by handling digital grunt work. McKinsey estimates this approach could cut implementation effort by 90 percent.
The fourth scenario eliminates ERP customization entirely. Vendors like SAP have already moved in this direction with cloud-only offerings. McKinsey suggests AI could enable "cheaper, faster, and better delivery" through agentic deployment and migration solutions, allowing vendors to regain control over implementation quality.
Software market expansion despite disruption
Goldman Sachs Research analyst Gabriela Borges offered a counterintuitive forecast: the application software market could grow to $780 billion by 2030, a 13 percent compound annual growth rate. AI agents might account for over 60 percent of that total, but the entire market would expand rather than contract.
"We believe agents will drive productivity, and software companies will capture a portion of this value," Borges said in a 2025 report. The customer service software market alone could expand by 20 to 45 percent by 2030.
McKinsey recommends that ERP vendors take a clean-sheet approach to reimagine business processes with agentic AI. "The underlying data structure and business logic may be largely reusable, but the process flow will completely change," the partners wrote.
