The organization released a peer-reviewed policy brief in September 2026 examining how AI is already reshaping crop production, livestock operations, and food supply chains. The analysis, authored by Alex Thomasson, professor and director of the Agricultural Autonomy Institute at Mississippi State University, synthesizes current research to assess where AI adoption stands and what policy gaps must be addressed.

"Artificial intelligence has advanced so fast that it's not really just a research tool anymore; it's embedded in agricultural practice now," Thomasson said. "From autonomous weed spraying to AI-assisted seed selection to real-time food safety inspection on processing lines, the technology is already changing how farmers work, how food moves through the system and what we expect from that system."
The analysis documents AI applications spanning the entire food system: genetic seed selection, precision crop management, livestock monitoring, and optical inspection systems for food safety on processing lines.
Five Critical Policy Findings
The brief outlines five key conclusions for policymakers:
First, AI has transitioned from future promise to current practice, creating immediate benefits but also new regulatory questions that require attention now.
Second, the emergence of "physical AI"—systems that take autonomous action rather than simply providing recommendations—represents a qualitative change in how the technology operates in agricultural settings.
Third, data infrastructure is foundational. AI performance depends on both the quantity and quality of data, making rural connectivity a critical policy priority rather than a secondary concern.
Fourth, AI deployment is occurring simultaneously across all food system segments, from farm inputs to consumer-facing food safety measures.
Fifth, federal decisions on data centers, broadband deployment, data ownership frameworks, and workforce training will determine who captures AI's economic benefits and whether rural areas participate in or are left behind by the technology transition.
Infrastructure and Workforce Gaps
"How AI develops, how it is used in agriculture and who has access to it over time are going to be heavily influenced by policy decisions, many of which are made by legislators," Thomasson said. "We need funds for research, we need broadband connectivity in rural areas, we need clarity around data ownership and we need to invest in the workforce that can build and maintain these systems. None of that happens without policy."
Chris Boomsma, CAST's executive director, emphasized the organization's role in translating complex agricultural science into actionable policy guidance. "This brief gives Congress and federal agencies the scientific foundation they need to make smart decisions right now, not after the technology has outpaced the regulatory environment entirely," Boomsma said.
